I happened to glance out at the lake around 5:40 and there were hundreds of Bonaparte's gulls and common and Forster's terns passing by to the west. As I was watching through the scope a jaeger passed by around 6:00. The bird was a dark gray with narrow wings, a paler head and rump. It flew with a buoyant tern-like flight. There was distinct white flash on the undersides of the wings. The bird was pretty close to the size of the nearby Bonaparte's gulls. The bird flew steadily to the west before disappearing out of sight I continued watching with hopes of something else good. The flight stopped abruptly around 6:20. Winds were out of the northwest and were gusty. The winds slowed down considerably about the same time the flight stopped. I'm not sure how long they were passing before I started watching. In the 40 minutes or more that I watched I'd say around 1,000 birds passed by with Bonaparte's making up around 70%. Nearly all appeared to be adults. There were both common and Forster's terns with Forster's being a bit more common. It might give something to look for over the next few days.
