The colder weather seems to be moving birds along here. Landbirds were decidedly more temperate, and the first whiff of waterbird migration was under way. In 2 hours, I visited the beach & Visitor's Center area, then the New Galena area. Notables included: Common Loon - 1-2 were in the wide part of the lake HornedGrebe - at least 3 were off New Galena Ducks - included N.Shoveler (2), BlackDuck, Lesser Scaup (6), and Bufflehead (1) Raptors - little other than a flock of 12 Turkey Vultures and 1 Cooper's Hawk Gulls - 280 Ring-bills on beach were accompanied by 1 adult Lesser Black-baked and 20 Herring Woodpeckers - lots of Flickers on the move, but also had 1 sapsucker at New Galena E.Bluebirds - 8-10, many flyovers Thrushes - only Robins, but there were plenty of them CedarWaxwings - 30+ scattered between the 2 sites Warblers - mostly Yellow-rumped (25+), but also had 1 Palm near the beach Sparrows - small flocks of Field sparrows at both sites. Also had Song, Chipping, Swamp, White-crowned, White-throated, and Juncos Blackbirds - flocks of Redwings early, flyin south Finches - nothing but the expected House Finches and Goldfinches ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
