DCBC PROGRAMS - SAME GREAT PROGRAMS, NEW VENUE The Delaware County Bird Club meetings and program presentations take place on the fourth Monday of each month, September through April, except in November and December when they are held on alternate days to accommodate the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. And beginning with the meeting on September 28th, the club will hold programs in the lodge at Deer Haven Preserve at 4183 Liberty Road, Delaware OH, 43015. Deer Haven Preserve is part of Preservation Parks of Delaware County and is less than 5 miles south of the club's old venue at Ohio Wesleyan University. As in the past, conversation and refreshments begin at 7:00 PM; the meetings and programs start at 7:30 PM. Meeting dates can also be found on the Preservation Parks Calendar at this link: http://www.preservationparks.com/events-calendar/ DCBC PROGRAMS FOR AUTUMN October 26th: "Full Annual Cycle Research in the Birds of Ohio" - Dr. Chris Tonra, The Ohio State University. While annual cycles pervade most aspects of vertebrate wildlife ecology, the vast majority of research has occurred on only one stage of these cycles, the breeding stage. Furthermore, even fewer studies have tried to elucidate how different stages interact with one another. This bias in vertebrate ecology has limited our understanding of the nature of population dynamics, and moving beyond it is critical to effectively managing and conserving populations. Dr. Tonra's research seeks to fill in these gaps in our understanding of wildlife populations with a particular focus on birds. He will be presenting results from research on Neotropical migratory birds, examining how different stages of the annual cycle interact physiologically within individuals. He will then discuss how he is continuing to expand his research program here in Ohio. Dr. Tonra grew up on Long Island, New York and started birding at age 12 when a Red-bellied Woodpecker nested outside his window. After getting degree in anthropology at SUNY Albany, he moved to California to pursue wildlife ecology at Humboldt State, completing a master's degree with Matt Johnson on cowbirds in the eastern Sierra Nevada. He then pursued a Ph.D. at the University of Maine/Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center with Becky Holberton and Pete Marra working on his program topic - seasonal interactions. Dr. Tonra completed post-doctoral work at the SMBC and began as an Assistant Professor at Ohio State in August. He is an avid bike commuter, gardener, cook, and has begun dabbling in carpentry.
