I was treated to a saw-whet owl in my backyard at Apple Valley in Howard, Ohio on October 21. I was outdoors checking for moths at house and garage lights when I spooked this owl that appeared to fly from my house roof and landed in an oak tree nearby. I went inside to change the lens to a 70 to 300 mm zoom lens. I used a flashlight to find him and to supplement my built-in flash and managed to get a few good shots. He stood for all of this, finally only moving a little ways farther on a tree limb and I decided to stop annoying it. I've attached a photo for verification that this is a saw-whet owl--I've never seen one before. Don Comis Howard, Ohio (Knox County, about 7 miles from Mt. Vernon, Ohio) P.S. This is my first posting to this site, so let me know if I shouldn't attach photos or if the photo is too large. I used Irfan to reduce it as much as I could quickly. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
