Yesterday evening right before dusk, I putting equipment away when I heard
Common Grackles and Rusty and Red-winged Blackbirds overhead. It was quite
a commotion so I looked up and was amazed. I counted at least a thousand
flying south - some of the flock had already passed before the tally began
so I don't know how many were not counted. They formed a long,
shape-shifting black "cloud," from 5-80 birds wide, that streamed
southward. What an incredible sight and sound to behold on a warm autumn
evening!
