Did you know it's possible to see 100 species of birds in January? Visit a nice warm place like Texas, Florida or California and you'll have no problem finding 100 species in the dead of winter, but if you look hard enough, you can even find that many right here in Ohio! That's right! Ohio! January is the time for new beginnings! New Year resolutions, diets, relationships and bird lists! As bird watchers begin their new year lists, most begin the year by adding a few species at their feeders or on a local bird walk, but look forward to the warmer months and migration to really start adding species to their lists. Why wait? Nearly 200 species of birds have been recorded here, in Ohio, in the month of January and at least 120+ can be seen with some regularity... if you know where to find them. You'll hear all about the common and not-so-common species and where to look for them, as well as mind-bending tales of January Purple Martins, Pectoral Sandpipers, Orchard Orioles, warblers, hummingbirds, and the bird that started it all... the famous Geauga County Brown-headed Nuthatch! So hold on tight and join Jason Larson and his merry band of birding cohorts as they crisscross the state on their annual quest for 100 species of birds in the month of January! Jason Larson is the Executive Director of the Richland County Park District and Gorman Nature Center. He is a lifelong resident and student of the great state of Ohio having attended The Ohio State University, Muskingum University and Ohio University, as well as the University of the Great Out-of-Doors and the Academy of Hands-On Natural History. In addition, Jason is a research associate and curator of the William Adams Herbarium at Muskingum University. Jason also serves on the boards of the Ohio Biological Survey and the Ohio Ornithological Society. A lifelong bird watcher, botanist, insect enthusiast, amateur astronomer, rock hound and natural historian, Jason has been chasing 100 Ohio January birds for over 20 years.
