My friend Alan Wormington, who lives and birds on Point Pelee, gently reminded me that they never see broad-winged hawks coming in over Lake Erie. Hence my report of having seen a large group doing so must have been erroneous. The Pelee people don't let any unusual birds get through without thorough documentation! So I amend my remarks----broad-wingeds do come through in large groups in a small window in late April, but the Lake's lack of thermals, which they're addicted to because their migration route is so long, turns them off, and turns them sideways on their way north!
