I gave my granddaughter a pair of Celestron Nature DX 8x42 Binocular when she was 11. At the time I used Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology binocular guide to narrow it down to this pair and I couldn't have been happier with them. They rival my older Pentax for light gathering and are better than my Nikon Monarchs. They might be a bit heavy for an 8 year old, but the optics are very good, although her younger brother has no problem with them. I just checked Eagle Optics and they are currently $139.95, but currently out of stock.
