I checked areas around these 3 reservoirs north of Columbus looking for waterfowl migration and early landbirds, with modest success. Waterfowl were not much in evidence, other than some flocks of scaup and scattered Horned Grebes. Landbirds were almost more interesting, with widespread blackbirds, as well as local sightings of other early migrants. The list included: Lesser Scaup - flocks of 100 (upper Hoover) and 75 (mid-AlumCreekLake) were the largest migrant flocks Bufflehead - only had a few at Alum, off Plumb Rd access Ruddy Ducks - 20 were still off Oxbow Island on Hoover Cormorants - 2 were the only unusual waterfowl on O'Shaughnessy Killdeer - common, with calling birds at virtually every stop Bonaparte's Gulls - 2 were in the middle region of AlumCreekLake, off Cheshire boat launch Sapsucker - 1 early migrant appeared along the Hoover Scenic bikepath NFlickers - the most common woodpecker, with 2-3 at nearly every stop E.Phoebe - 1 was calling at Pylon Point (AreaP) on upper O'Shaughnessy Tree Swallows - 3-4 were foraging for bugs along the crest of the AlumCreekLake dam Golden-cr.Kinglets - not many, with the ony ones being 2 at Berlin Station access on AlumCreekLake Yellow-rumpedWarblers - widespread, with the most being 7 at the Plumb Rd Access at AlumCreekLake E.Towhee - singles were at several different locations that they weren't at during the winter Tree Sparrows - at least 2 were still at Pylon Point in upper O'Shaughnessy Reservoir FieldSparrow - 1 was at Pylon Point in upper O'Shaughnessy FoxSparrows - had 2: 1 along Plumb Rd access (AlumCrLake), another at Area K of O'Shaughnessy Blackbirds - widespread Redwings & Grackles; cowbirds were less common ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
