This evening at sundown, after feeding and watering the horses and sheep, I took a walk to the top of our hill, and continued out to the campfire site on the tributary ridge, (a side ridge of the Flint Ridge upland.) The expected field sparrows, robins and meadowlarks were calling, along with a very entertaining brown thrasher. As I sat at the picnic table with a couple of our cats who had tagged along, I saw my wife Jane hiking out to join me, having returned from her art studio in Zanesville. As we walked back toward the house, 8:10, a barred owl called out with a very nice "who-who who-cooks-for-you" a few times. Very cool! It is the first I have heard any owls since the neighborhood great horned pair stopped duetting in December.
