So I have been working on the report for the Records Committee on the Upper Sandusky Western tanager, and I am finding some interesting information. First, a WT was in Pa for the last 5 months (Nov to April). It left PA on April 17. A WT arrived in Toledo on April 26 (300 mile west). A WT arrives in Upper (70 miles south) on April 27. The PA bird was starting to molt when last photographed on April 14th. The Toledo and Upper bird were fully molted 10 days later. That is cool whatever the real story is! I'm doing some more research. Can the Gordon's or Rosenberg's of Toledo please e-mail me a specific timeline or details and some pictures if possible. The e-bird pics were good but I'm not sure if there are more or if it is OK to use them. Thanks in advance! By the way the bird was still there today. What a treat! Another crazy story about all this. My friend who isn't a birder overheard the homeowners talking about the bird at a restaurant. He asked them about it and said he knew someone who would know what it is. He sent me a picture of the bird. I thought he was playing a prank. I immediately called him back. He put the homeowner on and I got the details. The homeowners are not birders but thought they had figured out what it was. If my friend hadnt butted in or he hadnt contacted me. The bird would likely have remained a neighborhood novelty instead of an Ohio record, and life bird for many. How cool! Have a great migration.
