Lots of singing, but few obvious migrants out in these 2 MetroParks southeast of Columbus this morning. I hiked part of the wetlands and the 5-Oaks trail at Slate Run, and did the Ridge-Homesite trails loop at Chesnut Ridge, and also stopped at several places along Little Walnut Creek (Waterloo, Ashworth Bridge, Bareis Preserve). Notable birds included: GreenHeron - 1 was in the small wooded pond east of the Slate Run wetland parking lot. Sandhill Cranes - a pair was at the southern edge of the SlateRun wetlands. Others reported a baby with them, but I couldn't confirm this. BarredOwl - 1 juvenile calling along the Maple Loop at Slate Run (staff have seen 1-2 for a week now) AmerKestrel - a pair have set up a territory at Bareis Preserve Hummingbirds - common for a change, with 1-3 birds at every stop Flycatchers - WoodPewees abundant, especially at Slate Run; Acadians were common only in the forested areas. 4+ Willows were at Bareis. Great Cresteds were in many locations Vireos - Red-eyed were abundant at Slate Run & ChesnutRidge, while Warbling were more common at the Little Walnut Parks. The only Yellow-throated was at Chesnut Ridge. Thrushes - 2 Swainson's were still lingering at Chesnut Ridge, while Wood Thrushes were widespread Mimids - singing Brown Thrashers were at Bareis and the Slate Run Wetland Warblers - Knetuckies were big news, with 4 singing birds at Slate Run and another at Chesnut Ridge. Hoodeds were also spread between these 2 parks as well. Also had Parula, Yellows, Yellow-throated, and Common Yellowthroats. The only possible migrants were AmericanRedstarts at Waterloo and at Slate Run. 3 Louisiana Waterthrushes were still singing along the ravine creeks on the 5Oaks trail at Slate Run.
