I birded the Lake Erie Bluffs in Lake County this morning. There were 17 species of warblers including a singing Connecticut warbler. It was found in the extreme southwest corner of the big loop trail west of Lane Road. The bird was singing very sparingly and was seen only briefly. It was in a dense stand of honeysuckle. Other birds of note this morning were 5 mourning warblers, all of the flycatchers except olive-sided, and 2,800 waxwings What was interesting was the waxwings were flying west and all of the blue jays were heading east. Lake Erie Bluffs Metropark--Lane Rd., Lake, Ohio, US May 26, 2016 6:50 AM - 10:25 AM Protocol: Traveling 3.0 mile(s) Comments: There were a lot of birds migrating today. Blue jays were heading east and waxwings west. A late meadowlark was seen flying out over the lake heading west. Warblers other than local breeders were mainly females. Most were high up in the red oak trees that were flowering. 92 species Canada Goose 41 Red-breasted Merganser 1 Wild Turkey 2 Great Blue Heron 1 Turkey Vulture 34 Osprey 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 3 Bald Eagle 3 Red-tailed Hawk 3 Semipalmated Plover 3 Killdeer 2 Dunlin 31 Ring-billed Gull 189 Herring Gull 14 Mourning Dove 4 Black-billed Cuckoo 1 Chimney Swift 13 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-headed Woodpecker 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Downy Woodpecker 3 Northern Flicker 2 American Kestrel 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 3 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 2 Acadian Flycatcher 4 Alder Flycatcher 2 Willow Flycatcher 13 Least Flycatcher 1 Eastern Phoebe 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 3 Eastern Kingbird 7 Warbling Vireo 12 Philadelphia Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 10 Blue Jay 370 Large numbers of blue jays were migrating east along the lake American Crow 3 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 41 Purple Martin 9 Tree Swallow 6 Bank Swallow 275 Barn Swallow 5 Black-capped Chickadee 1 Tufted Titmouse 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 2 House Wren 6 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Veery 6 Gray-cheeked Thrush 1 Swainson's Thrush 8 Wood Thrush 14 American Robin 29 Gray Catbird 74 Brown Thrasher 2 Northern Mockingbird 1 European Starling 22 American Pipit 6 Cedar Waxwing 2860 Large numbers of waxwings were moving west along the lake.
