I observed a GBH on the water and enjoyed watching those long legs come out of the water as it took off. They can do this but I think you should consider yourself fortunate to observe it. Spend enough time 'in the field' and you see all kinds of strange stuff. For example, I have seen or heard three large trees or big branches fall in the woods this spring, and NOT all on windy days - go figure! One said that it floated for 2 or 3 minutes and another said they were offshore Lake Erie and another person wrote that one landed on a small pond for a few seconds.
