Last night we just happened to be driving between social engagements,
passing through downtown Zanesville in the late dusk, when I noticed
considerable numbers of chimney swifts swirling, around the GOSS company
building at Marietta Street and the 6th Street bridge, adjacent to the
canal and river. I was driving, so detailed observation was not an option,
as correctly advised by my passenger wife, Jane. There appear to be a
couple old chimneys in the vicinity, and I do not know exactly which was
the focus of the activity, but this was classic chimney swift roosting
behavior. I would say there were around a couple hundred birds. If I have
time, some evening soon I will drive the ten or twelve miles into town to
check this out in greater detail.
