I stopped at several areas of this MetroPark west of Columbus today, and found both birds and birders, particularly around the Darby Bend Lakes area. The shift in weather seems to have shaken things up, and we found a good diversity of most migrants except flycatchers. Highlights included: Cormorants - had a high flock of 60 birds headed southwest over Darby Bend Lakes early Waterfowl - several people reported small flocks of Blue-winged Teal early at Darby Bend Lakes, but they were scared off later by increased foot traffic Raptors - 1 Osprey and a few Turkey Vultures were the only raptors of the morning Hummingbirds - still 2-3 around here Flycatchers - Wood Pewees were the only ones found Swallows - a small flock of Rough-wings, along with a few Trees, were on one of the ponds at Darby Bend. There were also 6-8 Barn Swallows flying south. Vireos - 2+ Warbling were still here, as well as 3+ Red-eyed. A Philadelphia was reported by other birders. Thrushes - 2 Swainsons were around the edge of Darby Bend lakes, but little else; no Robin flocks Cedar Waxwings - abundant around berry bushes along creek, with 200+ birds over the morning Warblers - modest burst of activity in the early morning, but difficult to find afterwards. Still scratched up 12 species, with the highlights being late Yellow and Yellow-throated. Others included Parula, Tennessee, , Magnolias, Chesnut-sided, Black-thr.Green, Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Black&White, Redstart, Wilson's Tanagers - had both female Scarlet and female Summer at Darby Bend lakes Grosbeaks,Buntings - 1-2 Rose-br.Grosbeaks were at Darby Bend Lakes, While Indigo Buntings were at nearby Beaver Lake Bobolink - at least 1 flyover was at Darby Bend Lakes late in the morning Blackbirds - no big flocks yet, but did have small groups of both Red-winged Blackbirds and Grackles ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
