I visited several areas in this south Columbus Park yesterday morning, focusing on the Heron POnd-to-Confluence area looking for waterbirds and migrants. Waterbird migrants were mostly clustered in the Borrow Pits south of I-270, while landbird migrants were spotty. Morning diurnal migrants like Robins, waxwings, and blackbirds are becoming a larger portion of migrant landbirds now. Notables included: Greenwinged Teal - 6 were with the mallards & egrets in the Borrow Pits Great Egrets - at least 10 were in one of the drying borrow pits south of I-270 Green Herons - 2 were in the Borrow Pits, while another was at the Confluence area. Shorebirds - the Borrow Pits had 6 Kilddeer, 1 Gr.Yellowlegs, 6 L.Yellowlegs, 2 Pectorals and 2 LeastSpr Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 adult was in the narrow riparian area at Heron Pond, an obvious migrant Flycatchers - a few Wood Pewees, but they were not common Vireos - singing Warbling was at Heron Pond, while single Red-eyed were at several locations Thrushes - Swainsons were numerous, and a calling Wood Thrush was still around the Confluence area Waxwings - small flocks at several areas Warblers - brief pulse early at Heron Pond, including Parula, Tennessee, Magnolia, Blackpoll, Redstart, and ComYellowthroat. Scarce elsewhere, but did have a Cape May at Confluence Buntings,Grosbeaks - Indigo Buntings were at severla spots, and Heron Pond had a Rose-br.Grosbeak Blackbirds - migrant flocks of morning Red-winged Blackbirds at Heron Pond and the Borrow Pits ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
