The Columbus CBC ran yesterday despite the slick conditions, and the cold front produced a bumper crop of unusual species. With about 2/3 of teams reporting , the Count totals are taking shape. Chief among the unusual ones were:

Sandhill cranes - 8 different teams had flyover flocks, ranging in size from 2 to 70 birds. With the cold continuing today, central Ohio birders may want to glance up periodically to see if the movement continues

Falcons - a peregrine and 3 different Merlins graced the Count, so these falcons weren't daunted by the cold.

Wilson's Snipe, Killdeer - 2 shorebirds is very unusual in this ice-glazed landscape

Red-headed Woodpeckers - many more around this winter, with 5 different teams reporting them so far.

Sparrows - good diversity, including Chipping, Field, Swamps, and Fox
