Since no one else has done so, I thought I'd pass along information about the immature ivory gull that was found and photographed yesterday afternoon. Troy Shively and I were among the first humans--other than hunters shooting (ineffectually I'm glad to report) at ducks--at the beach at the Delaware reservoir. We left late in the morning without having seen the bird, nor had anyone else. Maybe a hundred excellent observers were around. I met a lot of folks I too seldom see, though I saw few observers under thirty. There have been enough occurrences of this Arctic species at our latitude to see some characteristic behaviors, and I'm glad to say that they often hang around for a few days. Some of the observers, mindful of this species' northern feeding habits, brought chicken and beef in hopes they'd attract them, but no soap. No one tried to mimic the love-call of the ivory gull, though, and that might be next. I'll probably have a picnic there tomorrow; will report if young Ivory shows up.
