Birders, Today I, along with Amy Wilms from Indiana, banded an adult female Rufous Hummingbird in Warren County, Ohio today. Apparently the bird has been present since mid-October, although it was not reported to me until this past weekend. It appears that this might be a first county record for the species, and is the only Rufous Hummingbird I know of in Ohio as of today. The homeowners, Eric and Elaine Buchakjian, are willing to allow birders to visit their property and see the bird, but ask that you make arrangements ahead of time by email. Elaine's email is: <[log in to unmask]> I don't know what the Ohio-Birds protocol is for this kind of thing, but I'd like to see birders who visit this site protect the homeowner's privacy by not sharing the location with others who might drop in without prior arrangements (I know it very rarely happens, but it has happened). So my suggestion for those who are entering sightings into eBird, one option would be to place the "pin" of your sighting away from the home itself. I've done this many times. Another option that I've been using recently is to place the pin accurately, but to hide your checklist from public output until the bird is gone. The bird has had a couple of opportunities to depart on a warm spell since mid-December, and is still here. But another warmup the next couple days could urge her to move on. Or not... Staying all winter is not the typical scenario for these birds. Allen T.
