The mild weather continued, but appears to have let many birds spread out from areas along the creeks, as Prairie Oaks MetroPark (west of Hilliard, a west Columbus suburb) along Big Darby Creek didn't have many birds. I also stopped at some of the parks along the west edge of Hilliard (Reynolds, Spindler), and actually had more birds there. The list for the morning included: waterfowl - only 30 Canada Geese, 1 Pied-billed Grebe, and 2 Ruddy Ducks were at Darby Bend Lakes. Spindler Park had 80 geese, 25 Mallards, and 2 Black Ducks raptors - hardly any, with numbers no doubt suppressed by the foggy weather BrownCreeper - 1 was at Spindler, while 2 were at Sycamore Plains Trail at Prairie Oaks Hermit Thrush - 1 was at Darby Bend Lakes, one of my few records this winter. They've been scarce here. TreeSparrows - a bright spot, with flocks at Spindler (25+) and Darby Bend Lakes Field Sparrow - one was at Spindler, where the redesigned Clover-Goff Creek meadows are great habitat. Swamp Sparrows - 4 were at Spindler, while another 2 were at Darby Bend lakes Song Sparrows - good #s, with 16 at Spindler and another 12 at Darby Bend Lakes White-throatedSparrows - good #s, with small flocks at virtually every stop ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
