Had a male Pine Warbler singing along Christman Rd. on east side of Nimisila Reservoir today. Plenty of waterfowl on Nimisila Reservoir right now, including the male Surf Scoter first spotted by Terry & Barb Sponseller and posted again by Brian Tinker. Along with his aforementioned ducks, there were 23 Gadwall near the Christman & Comet Rd. intersection (east backwaters). Good numbers of Bufflehead and Hooded Merganser, 2 Greater Scaup among the 200+ Lesser Scaup - probably more than just two greaters. Handful of Common Goldeneye, Ruddy Duck, and a pair of male Green-winged Teal. 2 Pied-billed Grebe as well, and about 6 Horned Grebe. Adult Bald Eagle sitting (standing) on the Osprey nest on the big island. Only one present at time and does not appear to be actually nesting. One Common Loon persists at Summit Lake now and there were 49 Horned Grebe present there as well, though we did not check the southern end as thorough as the north, probably 55+ grebes at Summit Lake now. Nesmith Lake had 6 Northern Shoveler. Springfield Lake had skim-ice on it, managed one Turkey Vulture. Quail Hollow State Park had a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks. Their Visitor Center has a few injured raptors on display, a pair of Red-tailed Hawks, a pair of Barred Owls, and one Great Horned Owl, proving that "free as a bird" doesn't hold up when Man enters the equation.
