I spent the day up at the Lake Erie marshes, hitting Magee Marsh, the Ottawa NWR drive, Metzger Marsh, and Pipe Creek Wildlife Area. Not a lot of diversity, but some really good birds none the less, and I still managed to get 77 species: Magee: Palm Warblers galore amid a surprisingly low species count (I had 7, but heard tell of two more), but the star was a cooperative Orange-crowned Warbler. Also had a Veery and a Hermit Thrush, and good looks at Snowy Egrets along the causeway out to the marsh. Ottawa: Almost got stuck at the beginning when a family of killdeer wouldn't get out of the road! A huge flock of Lesser Yellowlegs ( 400+) was notable. A great find was the LeConte's Sparrow at Metzger Marsh. I stood and waited for it to come out, decided it probably flew the coop, and started walking back to the car. I turned around about halfway down the dike and saw binoculars going up, so I hurried back and there it was! I stopped briefly at the Barnside Creamery for a Marbled Godwit, a Black-bellied Plover, and some ice cream, then proceeded to Pipe Creek Wildlife Area in search of Black Terns, which unfortunately were not present. Swallows abounded - several thousand of all the Ohio swallow species, which was a nice consolation prize. I'm betting next weekend will be really good as migration picks up! Good birding, Andy Sewell Columbus ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
