I imagine a good number of younger readers do not recall having to hose down and scrape the car after a drive in the country, or even search an automobile's bug screen (if you remember this) to collect insect specimens, but I'm sure bird observers are aware of the role of insects in healthy bird populations. There have not been a lot of well-conducted studies on overall declines of insect populations, but careful attention is being paid: see http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/05/where-have-all-insects-gone . Rest assured that declining numbers of bugs can't be blamed on the birds.
