This past Friday afternoon as I left work in Vandalia (northern Mont. Co.), I heard a faint, familiar buzzing coming from the trees. Over the last five days, that faint buzzing has become a full blown chorus of cicadas, getting louder each day. Knowing how much cuckoos love cicadas, this morning I ventured to Englewood Metropark and heard both species calling. So, I am curious, have other of you noticed an uptick in cuckoos with the cicada "outbreak" (I can never remember the correct term). And what other birds might we be on the lookout for that also love to feast on cicadas, maybe a kite, perhaps a shrike? I'd love to hear thoughts from others on this subject.
