Hi, We began year two of our breeding Dark-eyed Junco, residency study this morning on the Holden Arboretum Little Mountain property. The basic outline of the project involves color banding Dark-eyed Juncos during the breeding season and then looking for them in the non breeding/winter months, to establish if the breeding population is resident or migratory. Last year we banded 10 individuals. Our color banding was location based and the same for all birds in that location. Over the non breeding season we 100% of the banded birds we found were in nearly the same location as banded. We began today because field observation indicates winter migrants have vacated and the Juncos now in the area are engaged in breeding behavior. This morning we banded 4 individuals. One was a repeat from last year and 3 new birds. Since have some evidence of territorial fidelity, we began banding so we can identify individual birds and perhaps understand territories and other behaviors. As the season progresses we hope to also band females and fledglings. We do not want to visit nest locations and in doing so possibly subject them to predation. That said any knowledgeable suggestions about how to do this would be appreciated.
