What PPP implementation are you using?  FreePPP?  OT/PPP?  MacPPP?
 
That sounds just like a Mac -- "Time out?  Why *should* I time out?  I'm
perfectly happy, sitting here, not letting go of the system, waiting for
something to happen.  Once I get some kind of response, I'll let the clock
update.  But not until."
