Jim Fry and I stopped at the Area M boardwalk this afternoon at about 1:45.
The fishermen were gone and the birds were back. As noted by Andy Sedwell, the
little blue heron continues to be cooperative, feeding leisurely along the
area just off the boardwalk. The little blue paid us little attention and kept
getting closer and closer. A great egret flew in and joined it and as they
foraged side by side their differences become very apparent. There were three
osprey present, two adults and the juvenile, and about 8 blue-winged teal.
The latter kept calling, probably looking for more free room and board. The
overall shorebird numbers were moderate with about 150 individuals about. The
shorebirds we observed from the boardwalk include:
Semipalmated Plover (10-15)
Killdeer (150+)
Greater Yellowlegs (4)
Lesser Yellowlegs (15-20)
Solitary Sandpiper (1)
Spotted Sandpiper (25)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (75+)
Least Sandpiper (60+)
Pectoral Sandpiper (15)
Short-billed Dowitcher (2)
From the boardwalk we next went to the northeast shore mudflats. At this
location we located an immature bald eagle and a good number of shorebirds. The
shorebirds at this location include:
Semipalmated Plover (40+)
Killdeer (150+)
Greater Yellowlegs (5)
Lesser Yellowlegs (50+)
Spotted Sandpiper (35)
Semipalmated Sandpiper (80+)
Least Sandpiper (65+)
Pectoral Sandpiper (35+)
Short-billed Dowitcher (5)
