I made the mistake of deciding to walk the dikes at ONWR in search of shorebirds. Unfortunately the only shorebirds I saw were a handful of lesser yellowlegs, a solitary sandpiper, and a Wilson's snipe along the entrance road. Water levels are too high in all of the impoundments and an Crane Creek Bay. There were however a flock of hundreds of Forster's and common terns and Bonaparte's gulls in the west end of Crane Creek bay. Included in that group were an adult LAUGHING GULL and a black tern. There was not a lot of other birds seen other than a few dabbling ducks and geese in the impoundments and large numbers of great egrets and great blue herons in Crane Creek Bay. I also had a single dark-eyed junco near the parking lot and a few warblers.
If you decide to take the walk, keep your eyes on the butterflies. I saw at least 6 southern dogface butterflies along the trail leading north. This species is rare and local in Ohio.
