Greetings---Unfortunately, I only caught the very tail end of the glory days of the Gordon Park and Huron impoundments for shorebirds and such. I did spend a lot of time in the heyday of Lorain impoundment there (along with Tom LePage). It was quite remarkable for many waterbirds. In recent years, I haven't really visited any of these sites much for songbirds, etc. Where phragmites haven't taken over, there's still a ton of potential as Dike 14 has obviously shown. I often wonder if the creation of temporary habitat with poisonous dredge spoil is a net plus or minus for shorebirds, terns, et al. How the current state these and other lakefront landfills are in begs similar questions regarding sparrows, etc. I just checked the Ottawa NWR census from last weekend---NO sign of staging long-billed dowitchers is not good news. As for good news, the two best sites along L. Erie for shorebirds right now are probably Cedar Pt. Chaussee and Conneaut---and both owe their
current existence to human manipulation of the shore I suppose. Later, Craig
