Larry Jeanblanc sent me pictures of a Laughing Gull he found Wednesday
morning at the beach at Buck Creek State Park (Old Delorme 66A3). I rode
my bicycle out this evening to look for it. There were just a few
Ring-billed Gulls and no Laughing Gull. I saw a couple Spotted
Sandpipers and baby Killdeer. I watched the swallows for a while and
then checked the gulls again. I was hoping the Laughing Gull would come
in to roost with the rest of the gulls. It didn't but I heard a bird and
looked up to see a large shorebird coming in. I soon identified it as a
Whimbrel. I watched it for about 4 minutes and then moved too fast and
the gulls flew and spooked the Whimbrel. I waited a few more minutes and
then rode toward home. As I was riding along the bike trail just south
of the dam I spotted it again in a field of soybean stubble. I watched
it from for another few minutes before heading for home.
