While not quite as exciting as the lakefront lately, inland areas of NE Ohio are holding plenty of good birds too. Today I did a pretty thorough search (with lots of scoping necessary) at Mosquito L/WA and found: 750 Canada geese (some smaller, but not tiny), 2 mute swans, mallards, Am. black ducks, 78 gadwalls, Am. wigeon, n. shoveler, redhead, 100 ring-necked ducks, 28 buffleheads, 30 c. goldeneyes, 120 hooded mergansers, ruddy ducks, 2 c. loons, horned grebe, pied-billed grebe, great blue heron, 5+ bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawk, 40 Am. coots, 75 Bonaparte's gulls, hundreds of ring-billed gulls, 13 herring gulls, e. bluebirds, Am. robin, golden-crowned kinglet, Am. tree sparrow, swamp sparrows, and snow bunting. While driving through Trumbull Co. I came across a n. harrier in Burghill and a n. mockingbird in Hubbard. Yesterday I poked around in Mahoning Co. some. There was a nice variety of raptors scattered about:
sharp-shinned hawk, Cooper's hawk, red-tailed hawks, red-shouldered hawk, and Am. kestrel. L. Milton was slow, with: Canada geese, many mallards, 20 Am. black ducks, a drake mallard X Am. black duck, 115 hooded mergansers, ruddy ducks, c. loon, pied-billed grebes, Am. coots, 500+ ring-billed gulls, 40 Bonaparte's gulls, 5 herring gulls, e. bluebirds, and dark-eyed juncos. At the Berlin Res. causeway (Mahoning Co. part) were 35 more Bonaparte's gulls. Also some more ring-billed gulls at Berlin and Meander Res. A few double-crested cormorants linger at Meander. At least 500 Am. crows were seen in Coitsville/Struthers area yesterday afternoon. Later, Craig
