I journeyed between these 2 Columbus parks this morning, checking for lingering migrants. Waterbirds were largely absent; Antrum Lake had only 1 Pied-billed Grebe along with its small flotilla of resident Mallards. Otherwise, notables included:
Cooper's Hawks - 1 was at Antrum, another at Whetstone, and 2 chasing along the bikepath between them.
Woodpeckers - lots of residents - Downies, Hairies, Red-bellies - but little in the way of migrants. No sapsuckers and only 2 flickers.
Larks,Pipits - lfyovers were the order of the day with these two late migrants, with Horned Larks flying over both parks and Pipits flying over Whetstone.
Thrushes - good numbers of Robins, especially at Antrum where a fairly decent honeysuckle crop had attracted 140-150. Antrum also had a Hermit Thrush, and 2 flyover bluebirds.
Wrens, kinglets - large numbers of Carolinas were at both places, but I couldn't find any Winters or House Wrens (despite an intensive search of the Whetstone Prairie, a good spot for them). Only a few Ruby-crowns and Golden-crowns were left at each spot.
Warblers - quite a few Yellow-rumps still around, and my attention to them finally payed dividends along the edge of the Whetstone Prairie, where I spied a late BLACK-THR.BLUE mixed in with a small flock.
Sparrows - lots of Song Sparrows and White-throats at both parks, but the Whetstone Prairie really makes this trip fun. Amid all the Songs and White-throats (and Goldfinches) the Prairie also had Swamp and Lincoln's Sparrows.
