Took a trip behind Fremont's water filtration plant. Several dozen Canada
Geese feeding in the grasses with an immature Bald Eagle eyeballing them
from a nearby tree. Two Mute Swans were in the warm, open water channel
which flows out of the treatment plant. One had a grayish-color to the
bill, probably a young one. A dozen Mallards swam with them. A Red-tail
hawk was present. The swans captured the large silver fish, but didn't seem
to know what to do with them. They vigorously shood their necks back and
forth, as if trying to break them apart. No luck. The Mallards quickly
moved in and grabbed the stunned fish. First time I've seen swans visit
this unique, open-water channel.
I've got a neat video on my wildlife-friendly Website that shows over
100,000 Snow Geese. It was filmed by a camcorder by an amateur, but it is
breathtaking just the same. Robert in Fremont
