Hello!
Well the south winds of the past day or so have done their magic as this
evening, several first-of-the-season Woodcock were seen and/or heard at
Highbanks by myself and Ken Davis. We observed the Woodcocks in the area between the
Nature Center and the park entrance along the main park road, which
traditionally is the better area to observe them. There seemed to be some posturing
and jockeying for prime real estate from which to display as we saw some
Woodcocks chasing each other, rather than performing their aerial display (which
did occur a few times). The ranger also indicated that he heard some in the
fields near the road to the Northern and Mansion shelters. The Woodcocks
showed up just in time for the Woodcock program scheduled at Highbanks for
tomorrow evening. Directions to Highbanks and information on the Woodcock program
can be found at _www.metroparks.net_ (http://www.metroparks.net) .
