I birded several areas in Worthington (a N. Columbus suburb) early in the morning, then hiked around Highbanks MetroPark just north of there. These areas are all along the Olentangy River Valley, either along the river or in the side-ravine areas. Although migrant numbers weren't huge, the diversity was very good all morning. Sites included Antrum Lake, Rush Creek Village, and the Dripping Rock Trail of Highbanks. Notables included
Hawks - very thin, with 1 Red-tail at Highbanks and 1 Red-shouldered at the nest in RCV.
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 2 were calling at different spots in Highbanks
Flycatchers - banner morning for Empids at Highbanks, with Least, Alder, Willow, Yellow-bellied, and lots of Acadians. Also had Pewees, Phoebes, and Cresteds at all 3 sites, and E.Kingbirds at Antrum Lake
Swallows - Tree, Rough-winged, and Barns were expected, but a Purple Martin at RCV was a bonus
Vireos - Red-eyed were one of the most common birds all morning, with 30+ in the 3 hours. Warbling Vireos were trune to form, only being common at Antrum where there were lots of Cottonwoods. 2 Yellow-throateds were at Highbanks.
Thrushes - Swainson's were common, with 25+ birds over all 3 sites. Gray-cheeks were at Antrum (2) and Highbanks (1), while only Highbanks had Wood Thrushes
Mimids- Gray Catbirds were the only mimid, but they were common
Wood Warblers - 21 species: Yellow, Parula, Nashville, Tennessee, Chesnut-sided, Magnolia (8+), Black-thr.Green, Yellow-throated, Blackburnian (5), Bay-breasted, Blackpoll (6), Black&White (2), Redstart (25), N.Waterthrush (1 Highbanks), La.Waterthrush (2 Highbanks), Hooded (1 RCV), CONNECTICUT (1 Highbanks), Wilson's (3), Canada (1 Highbanks), Common Yellowthroat, Yellow-br.Chat (1 Highbanks)
Tanagers - Scarlets were at all 3 sites, but in low numbers. Highbanks had the most with 5; it also had 2 Summer tanagers
Other migrants - single Rose-br.Grosbeaks were at all 3 sites, while Indigo Buntings were one of the most common birds of the morning (40+ over all 3 sites). Highbanks had both Baltiomore & Orchard orioles.
