Sunday, August 9 - 9:15 - 11 a.m.
Our list was compiled from four viewing spots at the Main Metropark. The
first is the "disc golf overlook" on the south end of the lake. The
habitat there is now good for shorebirds. As we walked to the disc golf
overlook, we were serenaded by the sweet calls of indigo buntings, scarlet
tanagers, and pileated woodpeckers. The second area is the first parking lot that
looks out over the lake. This is where the majority of the great blue
herons are seen. The third area is located down the main road at the parking
area with the blue handicapped parking signs. You walk west and will see a
path that goes down to the water. This is the best viewing area because
the morning sun is at your back. Wear your mud boots ! The last area is the
former duck feeding area at the north end of the lake. The position of
the sun makes it more challenging to ID here in the morning. Good numbers of
shorebirds are still visiting the lake. The only thing missing were other
birders. Where were you guys?!?!
