I braved the Columbus Audubon Whittier walk alone this morning (7:30-8:45) and observed the following species:
(Below and just upstream of Greenlawn dam):
Ring-necked duck - 1
Greater scaup - 1
Hooded merganser - 6 (l adore the courting males!)
Pied-billed grebe - 2
American black duck - 2
Mallard - 64
Canada goose - 149
Great blue heron - 5
Ring-billed gull - 20
Herring gull - 3
(Wooded areas):
Carolina wren - 1
Downy woodpecker - 2
White-throated sparrow - 15
American robin - 1
European starling - 1
House sparrow - 2
Carolina chickadee - 3
American goldfinch - 12
House finch - 11
Mourning dove - 9
Northern cardinal - 4
(Fields North of Audubon Center):
Song sparrow - 7
American goldfinch - 3
After seeing so many flickers and bluebirds on my recent CBC I was surprised at their absence here. Was hoping for a kinglet, creeper, or sapsucker, but no luck. I may have went out a bit too early- by the time I left (had to get to work by 9) there was a lot more singing/activity and additional birds may have been easier to locate (heard my first wren 'chatter' & downy 'chips' around 8:30am).
Weather: 21 degrees (noticeably warmer than recent trips!), slight breeze, overcast
Cheers,
Heather
