The Columbus CBC team covering this area found a good set of birds this morning despite the cold weather, totaling 52 species. Numbers were modest, especially for sparrows and waterfowl, but it was a good day for raptors and forest birds. Highlights included:
Cooper's Hawks - 5
Sharp-shinned hawk - 1 (Blacklick Woods - Gene Stauffer)
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 adult (Blacklick Woods)
Bald Eagle - 1 adult (Portman Park)
American Kestrel - 1
Barred Owl - 3
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 3
Pileated Woodpecker - 1 (Big Walnut Park)
Red-br.Nuthatch - 1 (Blacklick Woods)
Winter Wren - 1 (Natzger Park)
Yellow-rumped Warblers - 22+ (Blacklick Woods)
E.Towhee - 5 (Blacklick Woods)
Field Sparrow - 1 (Chatterton Greenbelt)
Rusty Blackbird - 1 (feeder at Big Walnut shelter house)
Pine siskin - 4 (sweetgums at Blacklick Woods - Pam Raver)
The Blue-phase Snow Goose reported there for a few days was AWOL, presumably having left with some Canada geese. A Merlin was also reported yesterday from the Blacklick Golf Course, but couldn't be relocated.
