Subject: [Ohio-birds] An invitation from Licking County
This is an open invitation to all birders. Ohio Nature Education has signed
a lease with the Licking Park District to take over the William C. Kraner
Nature Center giving us access to Taft Reserve. Taft reserve is nearly 600
acres (425 which is currently open to the public) of mixed habitat including
riparian, meadow and woodland habitats and includes eight miles of horseback
and hiking trails. The north section which is accessed on Flint Ridge Road
just one mile east of Linnville Rd. has trails for both horseback riding
and hiking. The southern portion of Taft Reserve is on Fairview Road which
is just off of Linnville Rd and is where the nature center is located. The
trails in this portion are used as foot trails only.
There is currently limited parking at the nature center which can be
accessed by entering the first driveway. Additional parking is available
behind the two outbuildings and can be accessed by the second drive. ODOT
will be creating a new parking lot at the nature center sometime between May
& July which will supply guests with 30-35 parking spaces. I will keep you
posted via this list as to when work will begin but weather permitting it
should only be a two week project. We plan to open the nature center after
this project has been completed.
We welcome guests to visit the preserve as the Licking Park District
reopened all parks effective Monday April 4th. Please feel free to enjoy the
property and put bird reports on this list or email me privately. We are
excited to document the flora and fauna of the property with your help.
Bobolinks and Henslow's sparrows have been documented as nesting species by
prior staff and birdwatchers. I do know that just a couple of visits last
September and October garnered Yellow throated warblers, Scarlet Tanagers
and oodles of butterflies!
I have included a trail map of Taft Reserve for your use. While in the area
you may wish to include Dawes Arboretum and enjoy their facility including
their Dutch Fork wetlands.
Thank you for your time and Happy Birding!
