This is my first posting on Ohio Bird. I specialize in raptor watching.
Today 14 Feb. I made what I call my grand tour of 12 eagle nests in five
counties. (I know the location of over twenty nests but did not have time
to visit all of them) I left Columbus at noon and traveled to Prospect,
Ohio for the first nest and continued on visiting Big Island WA then
Killdeer Plains WA. Then it was on north through Wyandot Co. Then I turned
East to Crawford Co. then north to just inside Seneca Co. I finished up
back at Killdear plains at dusk to look for short eared owls. Here is the
total count for the day.
Bald Eagles 15 adults
Red Tails 22
American Kestrels 23
Northern Harriers 8 female 4 male
Short Eared Owls 3
Turkeys 2
OK the turkeys are not raptors but they are big birds.
I got some fantastic pictures of one of the Short Eared Owls. It was
sitting on a electric pole next to the road and did not flush when I
pulled up and stuck the camera out the window.
