On the spur of the moment Linda and I hopped in the car and headed to Big
Island Wildlife Area in Marion County and then on to Killdeer Plains
Wildlife Area in Wyandot County. Activity at both locations was fairly good and
we observed several FOY species.
Some highlights at Big Island WA included:
Greater Yellowlegs
Dunlin
Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged Teal
Highlights at Killdeer Plains WA included:
Pectoral Sandpipers
Dunlin
Greater Yellowlegs
Lesser Yellowlegs
Bald Eagles
Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal
Hooded Merganser
Trumpeter Swans
Red-headed Woodpecker
And then the highpoint of the day, two geese at Pond 33 that appeared to
be Ross’ Geese rather than Snow Geese. We observed them in length through
the spotting scope before deciding on the call. Attributes strongly leaned to
Ross’ including characteristics of the overall size of the individuals,
bill attributes, neck and flight as they twice lifted off only to return to
the pond. Back in March I and some friends observed the Ross’ Goose handing
with the Canada Geese by the egg facility. The pair today was near a small
group of Canada Geese and Ring-necked Ducks. I would be interested to know
if anyone else has encountered the pair at Killdeer and what their
impression was.
