I stopped by the Galena area at the north end of Hoover today looking for waterfowl and finding everything else. The reservoir here is 99% ice-free, and has attracted a huge flock of gulls, as well as some good raptors & waterfowl. Be advised, though, that the boardwalk is closed (due to ice damage), so getting clear views of many of these birds is challenging. I wound up walking the bikepath at Wiese Rd, as well as the old roadbed in Area N. Highlights included:
Osprey - my FOS was calmly sitting on the platform nearest the boardwalk
Bald Eagles - while walking along the Wiese Rd bikepath I looked up to see 1 subadult and 4 juveniles soaring up over the bay
Lesser Scaup - about 120 were scattered in the bay off Wiese Rd
Canvasback - around 25 were mixed in with the scaup
Ruddy Ducks - 3-4 were also in this flock
Gulls - large flocks were sitting and wheeling around the upper shoreline, over 1000, with 90% being Ring-billed. I checked through for other things, but could only come up with an adult Lesser Black-backed sitting with a horde of gulls on the boardwalk (which is making a great perch with no people on it).
