I thought I would share the results of my "Big Summit County Day" from
yesterday. I was inspired by a two hour bike ride in which I had 60
species in the Cuy. Valley. So I wondered how many I could find with my
knowledge of other species elsewhere in the county.
Jon Cefus helped immensely with the first 70 at Ira rd & Station
rd...thanks Jon! I then went to 9 other spots including: Bath Nature
Pres., Kendall Ledges, Armington pond, Summit Lk, & Springfield Bog.
I targeted a possible 100 species and over 12 hours found 87 expected
species. ..but there were some surprises. The unexpected one was a Coot at
Indigo Lk! The most shocking and perhaps good news is that I found no
Canada geese till Summit Lk in the evening! Same today I had no geese in
the valley!
The saddest surprise was no Henslow at Armington pond -as they finished
mowing the field. I did talk to someone who said there were invasive
plants there. The best birds were singing Winter Wren & Bobwhite (even if
they were reintroduced). I did have 11 warblers and 3 unidentified birds I
just haven't learned their songs yet.
Today I had the Rose Breasted Grosbeak I missed along with the Louisiana
Water thrush the Monday group found...almost 90! Anyway it was great fun
and we have great birding in our neck of the woods!
Blessings
Sandra
