I stopped at Slate Run MetroPark south of Columbus this morning, and had quite a few interesting residents, including
SandhillCranes - the pair with their 2 large juveniles was feeding along the edge of the 2nd pond south of the parking area at the wetland (off Winchester Pike)
Bobwhite - 1 was calling near the wetland parking area. If you read the latest ParkScope (their program guide, found here : http://www.metroparks.net/UserUploads/UserDocuments/2014_Docs/Parkscope_summer-2014_Web.pdf ), you know that they've been trying to re-introduce these quail to Slate Run, which would explain many of the unusual recent records of birds around south Franklin County.
Green Herons - 2 were fishing in the small pond just south of the wetland parking area
Waterfowl - hardly anything other than geese & goslings at the wetlands, but there was a single female Hooded Merganser and 1 Coot.
Barred Owl - 1 juvenile was screeching along the Maple Loop, a rather late date for a fledgeling.
Flycatchers - loads of Pewees (12+) and Acadians (20+) along the 5-Oaks & Maple loops, while 4-5 Willows were at the wetlands.
Warblers - a stray Magnolia was singing along the south portion of the Maple Loop. Louisiana Waterthrushes were singing and shepherding around fledgelings at several spots along the 5-Oaks Trail. There were also 3 Kentucky, 3 Hooded, 3 Ovenbirds, and 2 Parulas singing along these loops.
Tanagers - no Summers, but 4-5 Scarlets were singing along the 5-Oaks & Maple loop trails.
