I was walking along Big Creek at Lake Metroparks Girdled Road Reservation in Concord Township this morning. I noticed a small bird picking at something in the mud along the creek and it was a male red crossbill. It flew up into a small tree where it joined two other crossbills. the other two looked like females. The birds flew off to the south calling quite a bit. there are a lot of hemlocks and white pine in that area but none have many cones. Kind of a surprise for August. The birds were found at the very north end of the park.
