With migrants gone, I birded these two MetroParks south of Columbus with an
eye towards strays and was rewarded with several. Both Parks are islands
of forest along an upland between Columbus and Lancaster, and they often
attract prospecting strays from the forested areas of the nearby Hocking
Hills. This morning's highlights included
Cuckoos - Yellow-billeds calling at both parks, where they breed regularly
Flycatchers - lots of Acadians, with 22+ along Slate Run's 5-Oaks Trail,
and 16+ along the Ridge trail at ChestnutRidge. Also good #s of
E.WoodPewees and Great Cresteds
Vireos - large #s of Red-eyed, but also several Yellow-throated at each
park, and Warbling & White-eyed at Chestnut Ridge
Thrushes - only a few Wood Thrushes at each park
Warblers - a singing Cerulean along the north portion of the 5-Oaks Trail
was almost certainly a stray here. 2 Parulas and 3 singing Kentuckies
along the same trail continue a steady population rise for both species
here in the past few years. Hoodeds were in both parks (2 in Slate Run, 5
in Chestnut Ridge). A singing Redstart at Chestnut Ridge was possibly a
returning breeder.
Tanagers - Scarlets were at both parks (2 in each), but the Maple loop at
Slate Run also had a singing Summer Tanager.
Grosbeaks,Buntings - Indigo Buntings were common at both parks, but only
Chestnut Ridge had 2 singing Rose-br.Grosbeaks.
Orioles - 1 singing Baltimore at Slate Run was balanced by a singing
Orchard at Chestunt Ridge.
