The cool weather made birds active at both these areas of Columbus this
morning. Early, I visited spots along the Scioto River, from Confluence
Park west through Griggs Dam. In the afternoon I hiked around the trails
of Blacklick Wood MetroPark. Notables included:
Wild Turkey - common in other parks, but a hen walking the trail at
Blacklick may be the first there
Red-shouldered Hawks - 2 of the juveniles at Blacklick were putting on a
show, pouncing on stuff around the Ash grove picnic area
Bald Eagle - the nest wasn't visible, but an adult was flying along the
river near Watermark Lake.
Bank Swallows - the swollen river below the dam attracted 30+ feeding
birds, presumably from a colony hidden in the old quarry to the west of
there.
Warblers - both Parulas & Yellow-throateds were widespread along the
Scioto, even down to Confluence Park. More unusual was the persistent
Hooded Warbler around Ashton Pond at Blacklick Woods
Rose-br.Grosbeak - unusual was a male singing along the Scioto River below
Griggs Dam
Orioles - Baltimores were feeding several fledglings below Griggs Dam,
while a male Orchard was foraging at Northshore Park in downtown Columbus
