We hiked the North Road and Tower Trail in this State Park/Forest south of
Chillicothe, and found an interesting mix of birds. The road had the usual
deciduous forest suspects, highlighted by 4+ Kentucky Warblers and 1
Worm-eating, among 9 species of warblers,3 vireos,Scarlet Tanagers, and
Wood Thrushes. The return leg on the tower trail was more unusual, passing
through a timber-harvested area that was almost Savannah-like. It had
open-country birds unusual for this location, including 2 Prairie Warblers
and 1 Yellow-breasted Chat. The undergrowth also sported a larger bloom of
flowers that attracted lots of butterflies, including an eye-popping 15
Zebra Swallowtails.
