Hey folks, It's officially "take a non-birder out birding" weekend, all over the world! If you don't have plans for your Saturday morning, and you live in Central Ohio, head over to Hoover Reservoir in NE Columbus, and bring your non-birding friends, family, and neighbors. The Ohio Ornithological Society and Columbus Audubon are teaming up for a local "Buckeye" version of the global "Pledge to Fledge". If you already have plans, try to squeeze this in, or, just share your binoculars, and a some birding, with someone! What is Pledge to Fledge? "Pledge to Fledge", an outreach by birders on six continents, aims to spread the joy of birding with non-birders. That's why everyone is invited to Hoover on Saturday, with a non-birder or two, to go birding! We'll have scopes and binoculars available and regular, introductory species such as Killdeer will provide entertaining antics for new birders. Meanwhile, lots of other species (American Golden Plover, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Stilt Sandpiper, etc) are being observed at Hoover this week, so there's lots to see. Three guided locations: 1.) HOOVER DAM: south end of the reservoir, off of sunbury rd. 2.) OXBOW RD: center of the reservoir, off of tussic st. 3.) HOOVER BOARDWALK: north end of reservoir, meet in parking lot in front of Mudflats grill off of State Route Old 3c BUT, wait, there's more! If you're in Crawford County, near Crestline, the Ohio Bird Banding Association has invited folks to watch a public banding demonstration at Lowe-Volk Park from 7 am to 11 am. Bob Scott Placier and the gang would love to see you and your friends! If your Saturday afternoon is free, and you're in the Cincinnati area, Matt Stenger will be talking about backyard birds, from 1-2 pm, at the Wild Birds Unlimited store on Glenway Avenue, on the west side of Cincinnati. Many other opportunities and field trips this weekend! Enjoy as many as you can!
